Fastest car in the world? Meet the Rimac C_Two electric hypercar!
Rimac Automobili are a Croatian based manufacturer dedicated to creating hypercars and developing new technology ‘from the ground up’. Rimac first grabbed the attention of the industry with a nifty BMW E30 dubbed the ‘Green Monster’ which was tweaked to reach 0-62mph in just 3.3 seconds.
The same year in 2011, a more future-proofed approach gave us the Concept One, an all-electric sports car with a blistering 0-62mph in 2.6 seconds and a top speed of 221mph. When it was revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September of that year, it was announced as the world’s first electric supercar.
Eight years on and the idea of electric sports cars that can compete with their petrol-powered kin are not so rare anymore. So where does this leave Rimac in the great scheme of things?
The answer to that is in the same field – Rimac are still innovating and going strong. The Rimac C_Two electric vehicle is the company’s follow up to the Concept One, and is designed to attain Level 4 autonomy – and with that in mind, the claimed tech specs are pretty impressive too.
Four motors, with a maximum of 1,700lb ft torque and 1,887bhp, power the C_Two. With a dedicated 2-speed gearbox just for the rear wheels and a single-speed transmission for the front, Rimac is clearly continuing to produce cars based on their own rulebook. This configuration just might be able to produce a 0-62mph in 1.97 seconds – though how exhilarating that would feel is a moot point; more uncomfortable than exhilarating I’d wager! As a bonus, 0-100mph could theoretically be achieved in just 4.3 seconds.
Being able to achieve the capability of Level 4 autonomy (Level 4 is the rather futuristic level considered to be ‘fully’ autonomous driving. BMW state in their Level 4 description that the driver would ‘be able to sleep temporarily’) requires a great degree of sophistication – a level of sophistication that requires some unusual things to be added to a hypercar:
The Rimac C_Two features a laser-powered LiDAR, 6 radar devices, 8 cameras and 12 ultrasonic sensors.
We first caught a glimpse of the impressive C_Two hypercar at the Geneva Motor Show last year. Following this, Rimac later revealed that they are using an extremely powerful computer to help design the C_Two. The Rijeka University-based 7000-core BURA supercomputer was built to conduct multidisciplinary science research, so a bit of car design shouldn’t heat it up too much. BURA’s job is to help with aerodynamics among other things, where it can calculate the flow of air over 70 million separate sectors.
Cost and release dates remain unknown at this juncture, but the figures provided suggest that this may prove to be one of the fastest cars ever produced. In the meantime, take a look at the video to learn how Rimac has developed the C_Two thus far.
