The McLaren GT’s Space-Age Interior Materials

The GT, even though it’s luxurious, takes weight-saving just as seriously as the other McLarens

When developing the GT, McLaren didn’t settle for mediocre. The interior of the GT and the materials used have all been chosen with performance in mind.

Even though the GT is McLaren’s most comfortable and practical car yet, McLaren spared no expense in using and developing the most high-tech materials possible to make the GT not only luxurious but also as lightweight as possible.

One of the pioneering technologies used inside the GT is McLaren’s SuperFabric, which is described as ‘space-age’ technology. This claim is more than just fancy marketing talk because the SuperFabric was actually originally created for military and aerospace applications.

McLaren’s SuperFabric is being used as the boot liner and is so tough that you could take a knife to it and would not be able to slash it. It is also splash resistant, stain-resistant, easy to clean and quick to dry. Made up of many different layers, including a layer of tiny armoured guard plates, the SuperFabric is three times more durable than any McLaren trim meaning this boot liner should last a lifetime!

McLaren’s single-minded approach to minimising weight throughout the car can also be found in the rest of the cabin, where you’ll find seats made of supple Nappa leather, as standard. This leather, and all leather used in the GT, is exclusively sourced from a Scottish company called Bridge of Weir.

Other options include softgrain luxury leather, Alcantara or cashmere, available in Dove Grey or Jet Black. The wool used in the interior is also “the softest and most luxurious of wools in a production version supercar” according to the Woking-based supercar maker.

The GT follows McLaren’s hypercar, Speedtail, in offering a new generation of technical, lightweight and sophisticated interior materials. Their philosophy of ‘everything for a reason’ cultivates an environment of innovation in interior design, with the introduction of cashmere, SuperFabric and different types of leather.
