The Ford Mustang is the world’s best-selling sports coupe for 3rd year running.
The Ford Mustang was already the stuff of motoring legend before it relaunched in 2015, but its legendary Mustang status has surely been cemented after it racked up its third straight year as the best-selling sports coupe in the world. With cars such as the Porsche GT3 and Chevrolet Camaro, that’s an especially tasty title to boast about.
Sale figures?
Some 125,809 Mustangs were sold around the world in 2017, and unsurprisingly, the Yanks snapped up two-thirds of them. After the US though, China was the Mustang’s biggest market with 7,125 units sold. The UK ranked as Europe’s second-largest market with 2,211 units, way behind Germany with 5,742.
After that, Europe’s top five was completed by France (942), Belgium (900) and Sweden (512).
Ford sales analyst Erich Merkle commented: “The world is falling in love with the Mustang. “The Mustang represents the best of American design, performance and freedom, with an unmistakable personality that’s appeals – regardless of your post code.”
New look for 2018
Later this year will see Ford refresh the Mustang, gifting it a more athletic exterior and an upscale interior with soft-touch materials and 12-inch digital instrument cluster.
One of the engine options available in the updated Mustang will be a 443bhp five-litre V8, mated to a ten-speed automatic transmission, that can race from zero to 62mph in 4.3 seconds.
Special edition Ford Mustang Bullitt
If that wasn’t enough Mustang action, the special edition Ford Mustang Bullitt will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the iconic Steve McQueen film when it begins production in June.
Available in shadow black or classic dark highland green, the Mustang Bullitt is powered by a a more powerful version of the five-litre V8 engine, delivering 457bhp and 529 Nm of torque.
This special Mustang comes with new rev-matching technology that delivers smooth, seamless gear-changes, accompanied by a sporty V8 “blip” during six-speed manual transmission downshifts.
We imagine this would make the Mustang noisy enough but if not, there’s always the standard fit B&O Play premium audio system will pumping out 1,000 watts of power through 12-high performance speakers.
