It’s not often that you see a car so streamlined that it looks like it could thread through the eye of a needle, but the Mercedes-Benz Maybach concept is just such a car. With a bonnet taking up almost 50% of the entire length, the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 is certainly something you would not want to be attempting to park in a tight space.

We’ve been teased with leaked images and rumour of the Maybach concept for some time now, but at last it is finally here. Mercedes say the design is in homage to the classic coupé designs of the past and luxury Mercedes models from the 1930s like the 540K, hence that extra long bonnet; in fact the car is almost 6 metres – that’s nearly 20 feet – long. At the other end, a fastback, ‘boat tail’ design and gull-wing doors compliment the retro yet streamlined modern look and feel of the car. Giant 24-inch wheels offer some visual balance.

The interior is anything but retro though, with a spacious, curvy feel and driver data able to be projected onto the windscreen so you can keep your eyes on the road more. Mercedes call this curvy interior a ‘360 lounge’ and the curve of the custom bucket seats certainly keeps the lines flowing. The interior lighting will ‘see’ the colour of the clothing you are wearing and light up accordingly – let’s hope Christopher Biggins doesn’t buy one. The Maybach also comes with its very own unique, curvy designed luggage too.

The Maybach is an all-wheel-drive electric powered sports car with a 200 mile range and offering 740bhp. Mercedes say that the car will accelerate from 0-62mph in less than four seconds and keep going right up to a (limited) top speed of 155mph. The Maybach will also feature fast charging capabilities, enabling you to give your car an extra 62 miles of range in just 5 minutes – which is pretty impressive.

The Maybach has just made its debut at the home of way-out luxury sports cars, the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance during Monterey Car Week and is destined to reach production for 2017. Though I suspect that the stylish wood flooring will be one of the first things to be left on the cutting room floor of the design studio.
