Czech car manufacturer Skoda used the Auto Shanghai event as an opportunity to unveil the VISION iV, its new all-electric four-door SUV coupe.
SUVs have seemingly been high on the agenda of many manufacturers at Auto Shanghai, with both Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz also revealing new designs at the major event.
Skoda has revealed that its new concept study is particularly notable as it is the brand’s first to be based on the Volkswagen Group’s MEB modular electric car platform. The vehicle is capable of delivering 150kW and offers a range of up to 500km in the WLTP cycle. Its top speed has been clocked at 160 km/h.
In terms of its general appearance, Skoda has taken a minimalist approach with the VISION iV featuring handle-less doors which open simply through touch. Elsewhere, wing mirrors are also replaced by the use of cameras.
Skoda has said that the interior of the VISION iV will be a role model to its future electric vehicles, with it being created to offer a sense of space. Notable aspects include an instrument panel featuring two levels and a redesigned steering wheel featuring two spokes and Skoda lettering rather than the brand logo.
Oliver Stefani, head of Skoda Design, said the car “made the most of the advantages of the MEB platform and created a very generous amount of space”. He added: “What’s more, we are also highlighting our first step into the era of e-mobility with an all-new multi-level interior concept.”
A range of assistance systems are also included, from laser scanners and radar sensors to connectivity which ensures it can drive autonomously in certain situations.
Skoda said the VISION iV offered a “concrete look” at the future of its electric vehicles and outlined how it expected to have a total of ten electric models worldwide by the end of 2022.
