Rolls Royce Announces a Rare Boat Tail Luxury Commission

It’s not often that Rolls Royce produces a Boat Tail, so rare is it that a new commission for such a vehicle becomes big news. The Boat Tail itself is mid-sized luxury tourer; an ultra-exclusive coachbuilt specially commissioned vehicle. A vehicle that is highly personalised for the individual that comes at an eye-watering price. So perhaps it earns its new-worthiness.

So far, Rolls Royce has previously produced just two custom Boat Tail models, one for music star Jay-Z and the other for a Chinese businessman. The hint is that this third Boat Tail will be the final one. This, RR says, is a bespoke creation for an individual who has made his/her fortune from a family business that originated in the pearling industry. In keeping with this, the client provided Rolls Royce with 4 pearl shells for the designers to use as inspiration to develop the exterior paint colour. The result is a warm, gold/bronze colour that looks very classy. It’s a combination of oyster and a soft rose colour with the addition of white and bronze mica flakes to give a pearlescent shimmer, which changes depending on the light the car sits under. You may not immediately notice, but the bonnet is a different colour – cognac. The bonnet colour contains bronze and golden aluminium mica flakes.

Rolls Royce is known for being the ultimate in luxury automotives, and the company suggests that the Boat Tail is a level above even this – the ‘ultimate in individuality’ the company says, a ‘moving work of art’. As you might expect, the Rolls Royce Boat Tail is completely hand-built. The panels are fashioned from huge sheets of aluminium, with the curves and design profiles inspired by 20th century racing yachts.

Rolls Royce describes the edition as a restrained luxury vehicle, and while there is always a fine line between over-the-top and ‘restrained’ when it comes to such lavish expensive vehicles, I’d have to agree – without downplaying the achievement, it looks nice.

Staying on the colour theme, inside, Royal Walnut veneer is everywhere, complimenting the exterior colours nicely – or perhaps it’s the other way round. Rose-gold pinstriping in the veneer is a nice addition, and the feel is of warm luxury. Cognac and oyster coloured leather continues the theme. While the pearl theme is continued with mother of pearl inlay within the instrument panel. The clock in the dashboard was provided by the client from their own collection.

While Rolls Royce has not revealed too many tech specs for this unique Boat Tail, it seems that the third model in the luxury series is mechanically similar to the other two, in that it sits at 5.8-metres in length and utilises the Phantom aluminium space frame and is fitted with a V12 6.75-litre twin-turbocharged engine.

The rear deck opens up gullwing fashion to reveal a lovely bespoke picnic set, while the front features a Pantheon Grille which has been milled from a single piece of aluminium, with a rose gold Spirit of Ecstasy sitting on top.

Those lucky enough to be on the shores of Lake Como May 21st 2022 were able to see the luxury Boat Tail Rolls in all its shimmering pearlescent glory when the car was revealed at the Concorso d’Eleganza, Ville d’Este.

Not that it matters of course, as it’s essentially a one-off bespoke vehicle for a particular person, but the price is estimated to have been around the £22 million mark.
