Renault Alpine A110-50 Sports Car Concept Set For Monaco

The Renault A110-50 is a mid-engined, two-seater 400bhp sports car concept that is set for a jaunt around the Monaco GP circuit on Friday.

This powerful carbon-fibre bodied beast in a rather fetching, futuristic ‘Alpine Blue’ is based on the Dezir concept from 2010 and is released by Renault in celebration of the 1962 Alpine A110’s 50th birthday.

The A110-50 features a six-speed semi-automatic sequential gearbox with mechanical limited-slip differential. Weighing in at a reported 880kg gives this sports car concept a pretty staggering 456bhp/ton power-to-weight ratio that should give this car incredible performance.

Alpine is not just the name of the car, Alpine is a French company that has built some eye-opening sports cars over the years using Renault engines. Although falling under the Renault mantle in the 1970s, not much has been heard of the Alpine brand since the 1990s.

Renault certainly now seem intent on paying due respect to a brand that won the 1978 Le Mans 24 Hours, they say that they wanted to do a “proper race car” under the Alpine brand.

What exactly that will entail is yet to be fully revealed, though it is believed that this concept dream-machine will be based on the Renaultsport Megane race car providing 400bhp through the rear wheels. Though a production model, should it materialise, is likely to be around 300bhp and may well be a further three or so years away.

Alpine’s old factory is now the Renaultsport Dieppe plant, where the A110-50 is most likely to be built should Renault manage to get the pieces of this sports car jigsaw complete. The word is that one missing piece of the jigsaw for Renault might well be a desire to add another manufacturer to the A110-50 armoury to sit alongside Nissan.

Come Friday, and the storming of the Monaco GP circuit, the Renault Alpine A110-50 is likely to reveal a lot more of itself to an eager, watching public.
