Few cars set the heart racing – literally and metaphorically – more than the Porsche 911, and anyone with even the slightest affection for the iconic sportscar will have been thrilled at the recent reveal of the new 911 GT2 RS – the most powerful production 911 of all time.
Unveiled quite fittingly at this week’s Goodwood Festival of Speed by former F1 driver Mark Webber, the GT 2 RS is a 690bhp brute that can take care of a 0-62mph sprint in just 2.8 seconds, and reach speeds of up to 211mph.
The lightweight rear-wheel drive two-seater coupé achieves this with a 3.9-litre twin-turbo flat-six petrol engine, producing 750Nm (or 553lb ft) of torque and linked to a customised GT seven-speed double-clutch transmission.
Large turbochargers have been introduced to the equation to optimise performance and push an increased volume of process air into the combustion chambers.
A new additional cooling system delivers optimum cooling at peak loads and, at very high temperatures, sprays the charge-air cooler with water, which causes the gas temperature to fall in the overpressure range and ensures optimum power output, even under extreme conditions.
There are four-wheel steering features for added agility too.
If all this seemed particularly special, the cosmetic touches only serve to justify and complement its remarkable nature.
The exhaust is made out of extra-lightweight titanium – slicing 7kg from the weight of a standard 911 and “delivers an emotional sound without precedent”, Porsche says – while a smattering of carbon fibre drags kerb weight down to 1,470kg.
Every 911 comes with Porsche’s Communication Management, which acts as the central control unit for audio, navigation and communication. But the optional Chrono Package builds on its functions to include performance display, used to show, save and evaluate track times.
The package also includes a lap trigger and a stopwatch on the switch panel with both analogue and digital display, enabling drivers to record lap times with a high level of precision.
