A small glimpse of the Pininfarina PF0 Electric Hypercar!
You can always rely on the prestigious Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance annual car show to cough up some unusual eye candy for the cultured car enthusiast. This year Automobili Pininfarina has revealed some beautifully striking images of the forthcoming PF0 hypercar.
When Pininfarina announce that there will be a linked, but separate, department that will aim to put style and beauty into the EV, one tends to sit up and take notice. After all, Pininfarina has not done too badly in the styling department in the past. Described as the company that quite literally shaped the Ferrari, the Torino studio is responsible for almost 1,000 car designs from Ferrari, and Alfa Romeo to Maserati and BMW among others.
Automobili Pininfarina will exist as a separate entity from Pininfarina SpA and the actual car itself will be limited to around 90 carbon fibre bodied models at a price of around £1.7 million. Croatian company Rimac Automobili will supply the all-important electrics.
These images are the perfect tease for a much anticipated car that will be fully revealed in 2019 at the Geneva Motor Show before hand-crafted production begins in 2020 – Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance will provide a tantalising glimpse for prospective customers only.
Automobili Pininfarina CEO Michael Perschke said that this will be the realisation of Battista Farina’s dream – elegant, good-looking cars that are branded purely ‘Pininfarina’. Designer, Luca Borgogno, says that more than anything else, the car must be beautiful. Announcing this of course really puts the pressure on – as we all know beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so crafting something that is generally perceived to reach the high standards of beauty that the company has set themselves is not going to be easy.
Perschke has already described the company as the world’s first 100% sustainable luxury car brand, but when you are Pininfarina, with all that rich history, I guess you can get away with making such bold claims. Just as bold are the PF0 targets that have been revealed – 0-62mph in less than 2 seconds (yes, that’s two seconds) with a 250mph top speed and just 12 seconds to reach 186mph. And if you choose not to drive at such extreme limits, you can add to this a respectable EV battery range of around 310 miles.
Proof will be in the Pininfarina pudding of course, and while anyone with deep enough pockets to be a prospective customer will get an inkling of what we can expect in the future at Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, the rest of us will be waiting some time to see how much of all this is just wild boastful press-baiting ambition versus more down-to-earth practicality.
