A two-day auction at the Classic Race in Aarhus in Denmark saw an iconic Mercedes Benz 300SLR steal the show and sell for the highest amount over the whole weekend.

Hosted by Silverstone Auctions and Lauritz.com, the big selling event took place in Mindeparken against the backdrop of the Royal Palace.

In all, 100 top breed cars from vendors all around Europe and UK came to market and were sold for a total of over €2 million (£1.5 million).

The classic and rather dashing looking Mercedes came under the hammer for €326,250 (£251,859) – a pretty penny some might say!

Another Mercedes received a huge amount of pre-sale interest from the Danish visitors at the auction. This time it was a 1964 Mercedes 600 that was causing longing looks, as it was previously owned by travel tycoon and one of the wealthiest men in Denmark, Simon Spies.

His former runaround was sold for €140,630, which was about €20,000 more than the auctioneers had estimated the car at.

In general there were plenty of models for collectors to appreciate, as there were a lot of low mileage variants hanging around, including a 1974 Volkswagen Beetle with just 90 km on the clock. Like so many classic cars of its kind, it had been discovered rather unloved and abandoned in a barn.

Back to Mercedes though, as the brand stole the heart of the now former King Constantine of Greece with a 1993 500GE variant. The car itself was something of a steal, as the former royal – who is incidentally a Prince of Denmark by birth – snapped up the vehicle for €25,310.

Excitement was rife all throughout the day for this sale in Denmark and it has gotten the auction audience ready for the next big sale event: The Silverstone Classic.

This spectacle will be gathering once more at the famous race track from 28th to 31st July and it’s sure to attract classic car fans in their hundreds.
