You can certainly count on Porsche for putting on a good show when it comes to speed, while demonstrating high levels of elegance. Indeed, this is something that the brand is keen to prove at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed.
It’s only right that the 16-time winners at Le Mans should get a place at this year’s festival when the theme is Addicted to Winning – The Unbeatable Champions of Motorsport. Indeed, Porsche’s factory team drivers who saw a victory at this year’s Le Mans will be at the festival to show off some of Porsche’s icons. The likes of Marc Webber, Brendon Hartley and Marc Lieb will be making appearances throughout the weekend, from June 27th to 29th.
On Sunday, the 918 Spyder plug-in hybrid will be making its return to Goodwood to make its mark on the famous hill climb. This will be the actual car that set a record lap time on the Nurburgring track, which was six minutes and 57 seconds. Lieb was the driver who set this lap time and he will be the one behind the wheel during the weekend’s race.
In a press release, Porsche explained why the race track is so vital to its cars’ development: “Sporting ambition has inspired Porsche engineers from the very beginnings of the company. The race circuit has been the merciless testing ground for the company’s sports car technology for seven decades, and examples of technology transfer from race track to road include turbocharging, PDK transmission, active aerodynamics and most recently hybrid drivetrains.”
There will be a nice range of cars from its historic collection also on show across the weekend. This includes its 1998 911 GT1, which was the last car to win on the Le Mans circuit prior to this weekend. It managed to achieve the win on the 50th anniversary of the company. The chassis that will be on display is that of the actual car that won in 1998.
