Although the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class is just hot off the presses, Mercedes-AMG is already set to deliver its first high-performance variant. Given the title of the E 43 4MATIC, the new model will be powered by a 3.0-litre V6 biturbo engine and will be the most powerful variant of the executive saloon when it’s introduced in September this year.
An exciting offering from AMG, the engine has two new turbochargers and corresponding software applications. The unit will produce an output of 396bhp and it has a peak torque of 520Nm, which is available at low to mid-revs.
With its supercharged, six-cylinder engine it does the 0-62mph sprint in just 4.6 seconds and it will go on to an electronically limited top speed of 155mph. Despite this, the engine is surprisingly frugal, boasting a combined cycle of 189g/km of CO2 emissions.
As well as delivering sporty performance, the car looks the part too thanks to cross fins on the outer cooling openings and a diamond grille with chromed pins. It’s instantly recognisable as a member of the AMG line due to its high-gloss black exterior and distinctive lettering.
The rear end also features two chrome-plated quad-flow exhaust tailpipes and the whole thing rides on 19-inch AMG five-spoke light-alloy wheels, again painted in high-gloss black.
Heading to the interior, the look continues with sports seats and leather-wrapped cabin features throughout. The 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission has been tweaked to match the new E 43 4MATIC, which will see drivers enjoy more spontaneous bursts of speed.
There are several driving modes, including Sport, Sport Plus, Eco and Comfort modes, depending on your mood. There’s also a manual mode, which allows you to switch gear via paddles on the steering wheel. However, if you’re particularly energy efficient, the Eco mode will allow you to activate the stop/start technology and a gliding function to save extra fuel.
There’s been no word on a starting price as yet, but optional extras include seat upgrades, Nappa leather upholstery and 20-inch wheels.
