Mazda has used this year’s Tokyo Motor Show to reveal its latest sports concept car.
The Mazda RX-Vision will make use of a forward-thinking rotary engine called Skyactiv-R and many fans are hoping the sleek design of the one-off vehicle could be eventually replicated on the showroom floor.
Mazda has been a major player in the development of rotary engines – which produce power through the rotational motion of triangular rotors rather than the traditional reciprocating pistons seen in most cars.
The first rotary car Mazda was produced in 1967 and its most successful rotary-engine vehicle was the Mazda RX-7, which was available from 1978 to 2002 – selling close to 800,000 units.
So could this latest concept car signal a move to update and release a new version of the Mazda RX-7?
The company has yet to confirm any details of such plans but Mazda’s representative director, president and chief executive officer Masamichi Kogai reaffirmed the car maker’s commitment to driving forward technology.
“Mazda will continue to take on new challenges in an effort to build a special bond with our customers and become their one and only brand,” Mr Kogai told press at the Tokyo Motor Show.
