Mercedes-AMG’s GT is a lovely looking thing. We featured the V8-driven roadster back in September and now the two-door, two-seater sports car has been stretched out for a new concept.
Devised to mark 50 years of the Mercedes-AMG performance division, the four-door, four-seat Mercedes-AMG GT Concept previews a new 800bhp-plus petrol-electric hybrid model planned for UK release in 2019.
Revealed at this week’s Geneva Motor Show, the car gives a huge insight into how the third model in the AMG GT family could look, with a deeply drawn bonnet, raked windscreen and typically muscular proportions leaving no question over the car’s basis.
Daimler’s chief design officer Gorden Wagener believes the GT Concept embodies the most extreme expression of its design idiom with “perfect proportions”, a “puristic design” and “sensuous shapes”.
He also says it looks “hot and cool at the same time”; not sure what Mr Wagener has been putting in his coffee but whatever you say, buddy.
Mind blowing power
That hybrid powertrain mentioned earlier combines the efforts of an ultramodern V8 petrol engine and a high-performance electric motor to achieve a power output of 804bhp. This means it can complete the benchmark 0-62mph sprint in under three seconds. In case you needed reminding, this is a four-door we’re talking about here, folks!
If that kind of pace gets carried over to the production model, it would be much quicker than the range-topping Porsche Panamera, coming this July (3.4secs).
Aiding that level of potency is a specially modified version of Merc’s MRA platform that has been helping the C- and E-Class clinch awards all over the shop, most recently in 2017’s UK Car of the Year awards. The platform will also provide the underpinnings for the next CLS and S-Class in 2020.
Tobias Moers, chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH, said the sole aim wasn’t to out-do the Panamera in every way but to provide something different.
He concluded by saying: “Impressive driving dynamics coupled with high efficiency, resulting from an innovative drive system and tailored to the vehicle segment in question – that is future performance made by AMG.”
