Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Rolls-Royce Dawn has been named 2016 Design of the Year by Robb Report in its very first Cars of the Year awards. It’s been an exciting time for the Dawn, as it’s also garnered global attention during its international launch in Cape Town. Not only this, but it’s also been named Luxury Car of the Year by Top Gear magazine – no word on what Jeremy Clarkson thinks though.
In fact, the magazine has said that the new Rolls has redefined exactly what a super-luxury drophead model is. Big claim, but there’s plenty to back it up. What powers the Dawn? A question that has plagued mankind for years, but in the case of this Rolls-Royce, it has a 6.6-litre twin-turbocharged V12 engine under its bonnet.

Rolls-Royce claims that the cabin of the Dawn is a destination in itself, judging by the materials used to build it – it does sound rather like a holiday cabin, and we’re into it. The deck and rear of the model are finished with handcrafted veneers, giving a look of class that most other cars can only dream about.
One thing that everyone is keen to make clear is the superiority of the model’s noise isolation, which the manufacturer says is akin to that of a hardtop. Due to the fact that this new Rolls-Royce has an engine that’s over six litres, it’s a really good thing that the company took extra care over improving the amount of wind-noise that could have ruined an otherwise pleasant driving experience.
Torsten Muller-Otvos, chief executive officer, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, said that the design is set to appeal to “a younger group of discerning customers,” representing a new Dawn – if you will – in the manufacturer’s client base.
