BMW is set to produce just 700 limited edition M4 GTS models next year.

The car, offering 493 bhp, was originally developed as a concept idea based on the standard M4. However, BMW has confirmed production of a number of special editions that will use a water-injection system to offer a significant increase in power and torque.

This means the car is capable of 0 to 62 mph in 3.8 seconds and with a top speed of around 189.5 mph – although the price tag will be higher at £121,770.

To achieve the superior performance, there has been a number of upgrades to the car including a seven-speed M double-clutch gearbox, a titanium sports exhaust system and a revamp of the DSC and ABS systems.

Focus has also been put on reducing the overall weight of the vehicle, with the GTS weighing in at just 1,510kg, with the chassis fitted with aluminium control arms, wheel carriers and subframes at the front and back.

The official launch of the new M4 GTS will take place at the end of the month at the Tokyo Motor Show.

BMW is expecting production to start in spring next year, with the first models being delivered to the lucky buyers around June.
