Its clear that pickup trucks are becoming more and more popular here in the UK, in fact they made up the largest market in Europe last year for mid-sized trucks, so what is their appeal? Read on for our thoughts and a round up of our top picks.
More manufacturers than ever are offering pickups nowadays and sales are on the rise. There are plenty of options to choose from and recently there has been real growth in the UK pickup sector. The pickup is strongly associated with American culture and we are used to seeing them portrayed as ‘manly’ vehicles that are perfect for rural life.
Over here, we have started to view them as a potential alternative to the traditional Transit, especially for small businesses as they offer a secure way to haul goods. They may not be the most aerodynamic of vehicles but the appearance of pickups definitely has a unique appeal.
Advancing technology and general improvements over the years mean pickups now drive more like cars, whilst still being a really practical option for families and businesses. Despite our streets being quite a lot narrower than those in the USA, you will still see a few trucks squeezing their way through and they are actually a lot more fun to drive than your everyday family saloon, which makes up for the awkward time you might have trying to fit in a parking space in more urban areas.
Five-seater double cabs seem to be the most popular type of pickup and overall this kind of vehicle offers versatility and plenty of space in the back, with the option of adding a secure locker to the bed to protect from thieves and the Great British Weather. The UK may not be designed with large SUV’s in mind, but Brits are nevertheless drawn to these bigger, tougher vehicles and are making them work for us.
