The new Range Rover Velar will soon plug the gap between the Evoque and Range Rover Sport, Land Rover has announced.

The fourth model in the Range Rover line-up will be a mid-sized SUV designed to provide a happy medium between the £40,000 Evoque and £80,000 Range Rover Sport.

This means the Velar should serve as a more direct rival to the Porsche Macan and BMW X6 than any of Land Rover’s current offerings.

Only a few teaser images of the model have been released ahead of its grand unveiling on March 1st.

What we can gather from these images though is that the Velar will continue the familiar design language seen on existing Range Rover models, but incorporate smoother lines than before. Inside, the car is expected to boast an all-new interior design language.

The Velar is also set to be the most on-road orientated Land Rover model yet, which may upset those who have bemoaned a watering-down of Range Rover’s original mud-plugging philosophy.

Pronounced ‘vel-ar’, the name is derived from the Latin word ‘velare’ meaning to veil or cover, such was the secretive development process of the car.

The Velar name has been kicking about since 1969 though, dating back to the first Range Rover prototypes: the pioneers of the luxury SUV landscape.

”The avant-garde Range Rover”

“We call the Velar the avant garde Range Rover,” said Land Rover’s chief design officer Gerry McGovern.

“It brings a new dimension of glamour, modernity and elegance to the brand. The Range Rover Velar changes everything.”

Land Rover has been tearing it up in the new car market for a while. In 2016, it shifted close to 80,000 new cars in the UK, marking an increase of almost 20 per cent more than in the previous year.

That’s partly down to the phenomenal appeal of the chic Evoque, the daintiest model in the Land Rover range, and Velar’s arrival is sure to spark a further sales boost.
