Few SUVs look as intimidating and no-nonsense as the G-Class. In an age where the image and aura of SUVs has been bent, diluted and cutesy-fied (Evoque, Juke, we’re looking at you), the G wagon remains a beacon of hostility and utilitarianism.

Special Edition Mercedes G Class SUVs

With the Defender now out of commission (for now at least), the G-Class is the closest thing you can buy new that looks like the classic sharp-angled boxmobile we all naturally envisage every time someone utters the letters ‘SUV’.

Mercedes-Benz is now taking orders for two new special edition G-Class models: the designo manufaktur Edition and the Exclusive Edition.

Available to order now, with customer deliveries commencing from September, the special edition Mercs take the standard G-Class and bolt on even more individuality, style and luxurious fixtures.

designo manufaktur Edition

Based on the G 350 d and G 500, the new designo manufaktur Edition adds numerous black exterior features that sit well with the designo magma red, designo mystic white and obsidian black paint finishes.

Likewise, the AMG 5‑spoke light-alloy wheels with 275/55 R 19 tyres are black, as are the inserts in the side rub strips. The three louvres of the radiator grille, the exterior mirrors and the spare wheel cover are also in obsidian black to round off the design.

Inside, there’s black designo nappa leather with colour-coordinated red topstitching, an AMG Performance steering wheel with the same two-tone rim, black designo piano lacquer, red designo seat belts and black leather grab handles in the roof liner.

Exclusive Edition

Meanwhile, the Exclusive Edition is based on the G 63 and G 65 and includes AMG sport strips on the sides, rub strip inserts in a dark aluminium look and the spare wheel cover painted in the vehicle colour.

The wheels? Oh, the wheels! It has five-twin-spoke AMG light alloys painted in matt black atop 295/40 R 21 tyres.

How much will either of these set you back? Unclear as yet because we only have German prices. For what it’s worth, the G 350 d and G 500 designo manufaktur Edition are priced at €109,878 and €121,683 respectively (£92,801 – 102,772), while the G 63 and G 63 Exclusive Edition come in at €163,125 and €287,658 (£137,773 – 242,952).
