The Superbowl had people tuned in across the globe yesterday, whether it was for the New England Patriots, the Seattle Seahawks, or just Katy Perry’s half-time show. But one thing that car enthusiasts might have been blown away by was the first glimpse of the new Nissan GT-R LM Nismo.

Nissan at the super bowlThis car, which was revealed in Nissan’s “With Dad” advertisement, is set to take on some of the world’s best sports cars in Le Mans 24 Hours.

Nissan’s GT-R LM Nismo is front-wheel drive and powered by a V6 three-litre twin turbo engine and a kinetic energy recovery system.

Speaking about the vehicle, global head of marketing and brand strategy at Nissan Roel de Vries said: “It gave us great pride to reveal the Nissan GT-R LM Nismo during the Superbowl.

“The combination of the Super Bowl and the Le Mans 24 Hours – two of the most watched sporting events in the world – presented us with a unique opportunity to showcase our most ambitious motorsport programme in recent times.”

He explained that the GT-R is Nissan’s flagship road car and that this vehicle is meant to be the “ultimate GT-R”, with a sporting history that can be traced back three decades through Nissan’s motorsport and performance arm, Nismo.

Mr de Vries explained that Le Mans will be used to drive innovation in Nissan’s road car range and he believes that, although Nismo is new to Le Mans, it is ready to take on its opponents.

The GT-R LM Nismo will be joining the LM P1 class, which is the highest category of sports car racing.

Nissan also announced that it has set up three multi-year partnerships that will have a strong feature in the LM P1 programme. One of these is with the Swiss watchmaker TAG Heuer, which will be Nissan’s official timekeeping partner and official watch partner. Another is Motul, which will be official lubricants partner for the programme. Last is Michelin, which will be providing tyres to Nissan.
