Nissan unveils second-gen Leaf NISMO RC

Nissan’s new electric race car has just been revealed in Tokyo.

The second-generation Leaf NISMO RC, which was unveiled at Nissan Crossing in the city’s Ginza district, features more than twice the maximum power and torque output of its predecessor.

Developed by Nissan’s NISMO racing arm, the electric race car has an 120kW electric motor at each end of its chassis, with a combined power output of 240kW (320bhp) and 640Nm of instantly available torque.

There are all sorts of lightweight components and a full carbon-fibre racing monocoque structure, which bring its weight down to just 1,220kg. The end result is a superb power-to-weight ratio of 262.3bhp per tonne and an impressive 0-62mph sprint that is 50 per cent quicker than the previous model: 3.4 seconds.

In terms of size, the new Leaf NISMO RC is slightly longer than before, with an overall length of 4,546mm and a 2,750mm wheelbase. Sitting wide and low to the ground, the car’s wind-cutting form measures only 1,212mm from roof to road – more than 300mm less than the production Nissan Leaf.

Stylistically, there’s a more aggressive exterior than before, with the totally restyled front end boasting a long hood and Nissan’s signature V-motion grille, while the distinctive silver and black paint scheme with red accents injects a more dynamic look.

A spokesperson from Nissan hailed the new Leaf NISMO RC as the brand’s “most thrilling expression yet of the Nissan Intelligent Mobility philosophy”.

“[This car] shows how we’re setting our sights even higher when it comes to raw power and performance – making electric vehicles even more exciting for customers,” they added.

Nissan will only build six Leaf Nismo RCs, which will be deployed around the world to allow fans to experience the car’s power and excitement firsthand.

So it’s highly unlikely mere mortals like you and I will ever get a chance to actually drive the Leaf Nismo RC, but we can dream…
