Mercedes-Benz has revealed all on the new CLS ahead of the sleek saloon’s arrival in summer 2018.

Engines

Buyers will be able to choose from two diesels – the CLS 350 d and 400d – and a petrol – the CLS 450 – with Merc’s 4Matic all-wheel-drive coming as standard, regardless of engine choice.

For the most potent performance, you’ll be wanting the 361bhp petrol, which can dash to 62mph from a standstill in 4.8 seconds thanks to the EQ Boost system – an integrated electric motor that assists the combustion engine and provides an extra 22bhp and 250Nm of torque.

When accelerating, the system makes driving without the combustion engine possible and supplies the battery with power by means of high-efficiency recuperation.

The benchmark 0-62mph sprint is stretched to five seconds in the 400 d – which has 335hp – and 5.7 seconds in the 282bhp 350 d. All CLS models have a top speed of 155mph.

Design

The regular C-Class is a good-looking automobile, but the CLS shaves it into a much sleeker shape.

Speaking about its stunning looks, Daimler’s chief design officer Gorden Wagener described the new CLS as “a design icon as the archetype of the four-door coupé”.

He added: “In line with our hot and cool design philosophy, we have reduced its DNA to an extremely puristic level while emotionally charging it with an almost erotic beauty.”

Equipment

Merc isn’t mucking about when it comes to equipment, offering just the one trim level: AMG Line.

This means every CLS will come with 19-inch alloy wheels, parking package with reversing camera, leather upholstery, split folding rear seats and a 12.3-inch infotainment screen with Audio 20 multimedia screen, as well as a 12.3-inch cockpit display, ambient lighting with a choice of 64 colours, agility control suspension and a DAB radio.

For an extra £3,895, buyers can include the Premium Plus equipment line.

This chucks in the keyless-go comfort package, a memory package with electrically adjustable front seats and steering wheel, a Burmester surround system, 360° camera, comand online infotainment system and electric sliding sunroof.

Price

Since its world premiere at November’s LA Auto Show, it has been confirmed that prices will start from £57,510 for the 350 d, rising to £57,610 for the 450 and £60,410 for the 400 d before any extras are bolted on.
