Caterham is 60. Hurray! To celebrate the big six-oh, the much-loved British car brand has revealed a new limited edition model and appropriately enough, they’re only making 60 of them.
Unveiled at the recent Goodwood Revival, the Seven SuperSprint is a super-retro and race-inspired roadster, available as a single- or twin-seater and driven by a 660cc 95bhp three-cylinder engine, sourced from Suzuki and tuned by Caterham Works Racing.
Wrapped in 1960s-inspired full racing livery, the car sits on 14-inch wheels with race-like suspension and adjustable platforms, as well as limited slip differential and extended front cycle wings.
There’s the typical Brooklands windscreen, while the interior keeps up the vintage vibe with quilted and stitched seats (or just ‘seat’ in the case of the single-seater), trimmed in Innes tan Scottish Muirhead leather.
Buyers can choose from six paint schemes, all of which feature their own signature colour and named after classic race circuits, such as Aintree (green with orange noseband), Hockenheim (silver with red noseband) and Imola (red with white noseband).
The reveal of the Seven SuperSprint comes exactly 12 months from the Seven Sprint. Production of that car, which presumably isn’t ‘super’, was capped at 60 units too and all of them were snapped up within a week, making it the quickest-selling Seven ever.
Caterham chief executive Graham Macdonald said each of its cars built over the past six decades has been laced with the purist thrill of driving a lightweight race car.
“We started our 60th anniversary year with the glorious throwback Sprint – aimed at the more discerning driver,” he commented.
“As we approach the end of our year of celebration, it makes perfect sense that the car bookending the celebrations is a racer of a similar vein.”
Simon Lambert, Caterham’s chief motorsport and technical officer, added that the SuperSprint is the car Caterham would have developed if it had been about in the mid-sixties.
He went on to say: “It benefits from being injected with the passion and power of the modern incarnation. The visual appeal of our new baby is only outclassed by a driving experience that puts you straight behind the goggles of Stirling Moss and Innes Ireland.”
Prices for the SuperSprint start from £29,995 OTR and considering how quickly the regular Seven Sprint sold out, it’s possible you’ve already missed your chance to bag one.
