Nico Rosberg has announced his retirement from Formula 1, only 5 days after winning his first World Championship.
The Mercedes Driver announced his shock retirement earlier today, with immediate effect at the age of 31. In a statement Rosberg explained ‘’Since 25 years in racing, it has been my dream, my ‘one thing’ to become Formula One Champion. And now I’ve made it. I have climbed the mountain, I am on the peak, so this feels right.
So it seems like Rosberg is calling it a day while he is at the top which is commendable. But he also goes on the explain how the grueling 2016 F1 season has taken its toll on himself and his family, ”This season, I tell you, it was so damn tough. I pushed like crazy in every area after the disappointments of the last two years; they fuelled my motivation to levels I had never experienced before. And of course that had an impact on the ones I love.”
He also went on to thank his wife, Vivian, and the Mercedes team for making his dream come true. He mentions already speaking to Toto Wolff (the Mercedes team boss) who was apparently understanding of his decision.
This now leaves Mercedes the daunting job of replacing the World Champion, and the all important question of who will become Lewis Hamilton’s team mate for the 2017 season.
Whatever Nico decides to do next in his career, we wish him all the best from Motor-Vision!
