It has often been said that electric power is the future of motoring and, with with launch of Formula E, it seems that it will be cementing its place in motorsport.
The Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) recently held its media launch of Formula E in London where it also unveiled Greenpower Education Trust as a partner to the race series. What’s more, a racer for the Formula E School Series was revealed for the first time.
A total of ten Formula E racers will be held between 2014 and 2015. Additionally, there will also be the Formula E School Series where televised support races will be held alongside five of the main races. This offers an opportunity for aspiring engineers to get involved in the motorsport action.
At the Events in Buenos Aires in Argentina, Long Beach and Miami in the USA, Berlin in Germany and London in the UK, local students will be invited to compete against each other to construct and drive electric Formula E School Cars on the same circuits where advanced Formula E cars will be racing.
In total, ten School Series teams will be brought together at each round of the series. This will feature a 20 minute qualifying session, which will take place between the official Formula E practice and qualifiers, followed by a 20 minute sprint race that will take place ahead of the Formula E ePrix.
Chief executive of Greenpower Education Trust Jeremy Way said: “Formula E is the most exciting motorsport innovation in a generation and could not only revolutionise the way people view the sport, but also greatly enhance the advances being made in the development of electric and sustainable automotive engineering.
“The values and objectives that underpin Formula E mirror exactly our own aims; we have been promoting the advancement of sustainable motoring and engineering in the UK’s schools and universities for 16 years and we are delighted that we can now take our initiative on to a global stage.”
