Mazda have announced that the UK will get a limited edition Mazda MX-5 Z-Sport featuring a contrast red roof and leather trim. There will only be 300 of these limited edition roadsters, and each one will cost £25,595. The new roadster will be on sale in the UK from March 2018 – in fact, the car will be exclusive to the UK.
The car is based on the highly thought of Mazda MX-5 Sport Nav model with some aesthetic design tweaks and revised steering and suspension. These handling changes will eventually roll out to the rest of the range, so we can presume that these changes are an improvement, not just a tweak to differentiate the models.
Design-wise, the Z-Sport looks very pleasing on the eye; the red roof is a wine/claret colour (‘cherry’ according to Mazda), which compliments the seats which are finished in sand coloured leather. The exterior paintwork is a machine grey metallic – all three colours combined should please many and offend no one. Finishing off the classy look is a set of aggressive looking 16-spoke black 17-inch alloys from BBS.
As for the changes to the mechanical side of things, the rear suspension has received a bit of a retune to match the power steering’s recalibration. Add this to the Sport Nav’s Bilstein dampers, LSD and strut brace, and Mazda’s claim that the MX-5 Z-Sport has an improved driving experience might be more than just sales talk. Engine-wise, the Z-Sport will be powered by the same tried and trusted Sport Nav 2-litre engine and 6-speed transmission with 158bhp.
Mazda announced the steering and suspension changes at this autumn’s 2017 Tokyo Motor Show, and the MX-5 Z-Sport will be the first Mazda model to feature these improvements.
All in all, this looks like yet another Mazda limited edition that will please and tempt buyers – they’re getting good at this. Aesthetically, Mazda’s design department has done a fine job on the Z-Sport with just the right combination of head turning looks matched with subtlety. If you’re interested in this limited edition of just 300, orders are being taken now.
