The all new Mercedes-AMG GT, a sports car developed entirely by an in-house team at AMG, has been unveiled.

It was designed by a team at Daimler AG, which was led by vice president of design Gordon Wagener, and developed by an AMG team led by AMG’s chairman Tobias Moers. The end result was a two-seater sports car that promises precision, comfort and practicality.

Powering the car is a biturbo 3,982 cc V8 engine that was designed and hand-built by AMG. It comes equipped with dry sump lubrication and is linked to a seven-speed dual clutch gearbox.

There are two options for the car, with different outputs, which are based around an aluminium chassis structure that weighs 231 kg. The GT can put out 462 hp, while the GT S sees this raised to 510 hp.

What’s more, the GT S can go from 0 to 62 mph in only 3.8 seconds and can reach a top speed of 193 mph. Meanwhile the GT is only marginally slower; it can go from 0 to 62 mph in four seconds and its top speed is 189 mph.

The GT measures 4,546 mm in length, is 1,939 mm wide and 1,289 mm tall. Its bodywork is tightly packaged so that it has minimal overhangs at the front and rear, a wheelbase that measures 2,630 mm and a kerbweight from 1,540 kg.

On the interior is a mixture of luxury materials and technology. It is decked out with nappa leather, carbon and aluminium. The car also features an 8.4-inch central screen that features simple, elegant controls. For example, it allows drivers to control the exhaust valves using the Dynamic Select button.

The car has aerodynamic devices to help with balance and cooling. Its rear wing deploys automatically and it also has adaptive ducts that feed cool air into the hot-V of the twin turbochargers in the engine.

Both the Mercedes-AMG GT and GT S are due to go on sale in the UK in April 2015, while prices for the vehicles are set to be announced in October.
