Yes, that’s right folks, the end of the world if nigh; Maserati are building a diesel. The new Ghibli, which is sniffing around the BMW 5’s territory, will be offered with a 3-litre V6 turbo-diesel motor or a 3-litre V6 turbocharged petrol motor. It’s all about the efficiency you see, with this new Ghibli part of a pretty major Maser plan to sell quite a few more cars in the coming years (up to 50,000), and they hope the Ghibli will pique the interest of company car drivers. So, yes, Maserati are making fleet cars now!

But, let’s not worry about it too much, eh? Turbo-diesel engines these days can be a torquey delight, and as long as they get their oil-burner right – when hooked up to its 8-speed automatic gearbox – it could be a pleasantly diesel-pokey way to get this curvy new Italian body around town.

This is an all-new four-door saloon from Maserati and we can see cues from the bigger Quattroporte in it, but there will be no Quattroporte V8 engine, just the V6s, with either rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive.

Power and price have yet to be revealed by Maserati, so more info along these lines should be released when the new Ghibli makes its public debut at the Shanghai Motor Show later this month.
