New Jeep Wrangler: All you need to know

There’s a new Jeep Wrangler on the scene.

A completely reimagined version of the iconic SUV has just arrived in UK showrooms and we’ve gathered up all the relevant details you need to know about this boxy off-roader.

What’s new?

It might look like the same old Wrangler, but Jeep has freshened up styling, inside and out, with new LED headlamps and rear lights and a new 8.4-inch touchscreen system being the most obvious changes. The refreshed interior has increased storage capacity too.

Under the bonnet, you’ll find one of two new engines: a 2.2-litre MultiJet II turbo diesel or a two-litre turbo petrol.

Tech has also been upgraded, with the introduction of improved safety kit like blind-spot monitoring, rear cross path detection, a reverse camera, electronic stability control with electronic roll mitigation and four airbags as standard.

Tell me about these new engines

Both the petrol and diesel come mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox as standard.

The 197bhp 2.2-litre MultiJet II turbo diesel engine delivers 450Nm of torque and features second-generation MultiJet technology, four valves per cylinder, belt-driven double overhead camshafts, 2,000-bar common rail injection system, solenoid injectors, a variable geometry turbocharger – oh, and stop-start.

Meanwhile, the 268bhp two-litre turbocharged inline four-cylinder petrol option churns out 400Nm of torque, but it won’t be available in the UK until later this year.

Can I get the roof down?

Yes! Jeep says the Wrangler is ‘the only authentic full open-air 4×4 SUV on the market’, which is a bit of a snipe at the Evoque Convertible.

Either way, buyers can choose from various top combinations such as the sky one-touch powertop, new zipperless premium sunrider soft top and freedom top – a removable, three-panel hard top.

What Jeep says

Jeep reckons the ‘go anywhere, do anything’ Wrangler blends together excellent on-road performance, legendary off-road capability, and outstanding value for money.

Apparently, it’s ‘the most capable Wrangler ever and is just as happy on city streets as it is off the beaten path’.

What the critics say

Auto Express rated it a pedestrian three out of five stars, saying that despite being easier to live with and better to drive than before, prices are far too steep.

Autocar handed it four stars, describing it as ‘unflappable, unstoppable and “a playground for adults” kind of car’.

What colour does it come in?

Take your pick from ten: firecracker red, billet silver metallic, bright white, granite crystal metallic, hellayella, ocean blue, punk’n metallic, mojito, sting gray and plain old black.

How much does it cost?

Prices start from £44,495 on the road.

That’ll get you the two-door base-level Sahara model, driven by a 2.2-litre MultiJet II engine with 197bhp and all-wheel-drive, mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

For the Overland or Rubicon model, you’re looking at £46,495 and if you want four doors, add an extra £1,500 to those prices.

What’s the warranty like?

Every new Wrangler sold comes with a five-year warranty, a three-year servicing programme and five years of roadside assistance.
