The third-generation BMW 1 Series has begun the final phase of extensive testing in the south of France, the car’s manufacturer has confirmed.

A range of fine turning is now thought to be underway at BMW’s proving ground in Miramas, with the company outlining in a statement how the site’s diverse handling tracks are an ideal location for refining both the agility and dynamics of the new range.

In terms of what we can expect from the series, BMW has said it will offer new standards in the premium compact class when it comes to driving dynamics. In addition, it is set to feature improved agility both with new front-wheel drive and xDrive intelligent four-wheel drive.

The car is also set to borrow ARB technology from the BMW i3, with the transfer of the system expected to improve traction and also ensure more sensitive and faster control.

Furthermore, the new BMW Series 1 is set to feature the BMW M135i xDrive, which features the most powerful four-cylinder engine in the BMW Group with a two-litre capacity and TwinPower Turbo technology.

Discussing his hopes for the new model, the BMW Group’s head of driving dynamics Peter Langen said: “Our customers will directly feel the fast and precise responsiveness that provides for an optimised driving experience. The BMW 1 Series will be a genuine BMW with an individual character.”

Updates on the progress being seen with the new BMW Series 1 have come after it was confirmed that the company is set to unveil its BMW Series 2 Gran Coupe later this year. The world debut of the four-door model will take place at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November, with a worldwide market launch expected early next year.
