Motorcycle enthusiasts across the UK have been urged to make sure their tyres are roadworthy and reliable before heading out on to the open roads this spring.

Not-for-profit organisation TyreSafe has launched its new PACT – Performance, Air, Condition and Tread – campaign to encourage motorcycle users to stay safe when journeying in the gorgeous spring weather this year.

A simple acronym to remind riders of the importance of proper vehicle maintenance, the initiative is targeted at individuals who might otherwise neglect the upkeep of their vehicle. It is hoped PACT will be easy to remember and give UK riders the impetus to carry out a few simple checks on their tyres.

These include monitoring their tyre's air pressure, overall condition and tread depth, with the benefits of doing so leading to improved fuel efficiency, better grip and more responsive handling.

"One of the most important factors for most riders is getting the most enjoyment from their bike, particularly on sunny spring rides," commented Stuart Jackson, chairman of TyreSafe. "However, to get this, it's essential for riders to make sure that their tyres are in a safe and roadworthy condition."

He added that when riders pay proper attention to the upkeep of their vehicle this can result in greater reliability and help them to stay safe when out on the roads.

Spring is a particularly important time for riders, as many will have ridden less over the colder and more treacherous winter months, meaning taking the time to ensure tyres are in proper working condition before they embark on their first journey of the new year could ultimately be a lifesaver.

The announcement follows the launch of a new website by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, targeted at improving road safety for riders through information on safer riding techniques, proper vehicle maintenance and the latest statistics on accidents from the Department for Transport.
