'Old Bill' coming to auction

The Brough classic and iconic motorcycle the 'Old Bill' is set to come to auction in the coming months, with the model set to go under the hammer for the first time ever.

Launched in 1922 and known as the 'spit and polish' to riders due to its immaculate appearance, the Old Bill has become one of the most desirable classic motorcycles for enthusiasts over recent years.

Carrying an estimate of between £250,000 and £270,000, this unique vehicle is to be auctioned as part of the Roger Allen Collection at H&H's Duxford sale on October 4th – and could break the present world record for the auction sale of a bike, which stands at £280,000 and was achieved by H&H for a Brough Superior SS100 model.

George Beale, principal of H&H's motorcycle department, said: "If I could bring any motorcycle in the world to auction, it would probably be this one – the combination of significance and provenance is simply unrivalled in my view.

"Clearly, the value has been difficult to estimate but, based on our success with the SS100 in 2010, there is no telling what it could make on the day."

Factors which the auctioneer believes could push the Old Bill ahead of the SS100 in terms of value include the fact it is a low-volume works motorcycle and has a good, proven history. It is also one of the most desirable pre-World War II V twins.

The vehicle is to be put on show to the public during the course of the summer ahead of its date with the auctioneer, with the Old Bill putting in an appearance at the upcoming International Classic Motorcycle Show.

Taking place on April 28th and 29th at the Stafford County Showground, the event is set to attract upwards of 30,000 visitors in 2012 and will see some of the finest examples of classic motorcycles anywhere in the world.
