BMW’s 22nd century motorcycle

What will motorcyclists be riding in 2116? Well if BMW have their say, it’ll be something like this: the Motorrad Vision Next 100 – a self-balancing concept motorcycle that doesn’t require the rider to wear a helmet or any protective clothing.

Although it is all hypothetical right now, the bike (if it existed) features active assistance systems that enhance stability and automatically balance the motorcycle. This means that it will never tip over and even when stationary, the rider can simply dismount and the bike will remain stood upright.

This self-balancing system would benefit the bike’s handling and ride quality too, influencing a more agile and dynamic experience with even lighter handling.

Because the bike can’t fall over, the rider doesn’t need to wear a helmet or protective clothing, BMW says, although those living in the 22nd century will surely have more regard for their own safety than that.

Instead, riders get a pair of ‘data glasses’ that provide wind protection and display relevant information, suggesting ideal lines and banking angles or hazard warnings lying ahead.

They also get to wear a cool suit, which is laced with sensors that monitor their pulse rate and warm or cool the rider, depending on conditions. No more frosty winter rides, we can get behind that. The suit delivers navigation instructions too, through vibrating elements in the arms and legs.

Additionally, the suit has next to no padding because, if you recall, the bike’s self-balancing system means that the rider will never fall over.

The bike of the future may be more technically advanced but its physical design is more stripped-back, adopting a minimalist approach.

A large metal reflector is integrated above the front wheel, incorporating two vertical U-shaped elements that make up the daytime running light and doubles up as a wind deflector.

BMW reckons that a lightweight design will remain a high priority and as a result, certain body elements such as the seat, upper frame cover and wings are made out of carbon.

It’s all a pipe dream for now, but check back in a hundred years or so to find out how close BMW were with their prediction…
