This frugal favourite delivers kerb appeal and judicious performance in cities, and at higher speeds on the motorway, it’s 1.5L engine even gives us a little grumble.

2. Peugeot 208 – 71.4 mpg

Certainly a wallet-pleaser, this Peugeot uses the same engine as the Vauxhall Corsa and features exciting technological advancements to it’s previous models, including a 3D digital display that projects info onto a display in front of the windscreen. 

3. Volkswagen Golf – 68.9 mpg

You can’t go wrong with this family-friendly hatchback. The 3.0 diesel engine offers decent fuel efficiency,  using direct fuel injection and a turbo which makes it surprisingly nippy.

4. Mazda 2 – 60.1 mpg

Extremely affordable, brilliant driving experience and it looks great.  The base 75bhp petrol does 58.9mpg, but for a little more money you can get the 90bhp version which manages 60.1 mpg.

5. Ford Fiesta – 53.3 mpg

Commonplace on the roads for good reason – this hatchback handles brilliantly around the roads, and is well priced. Both 75bhp and 100bhp offer 53.3mpg in combined driving, so we would go for the latter!
