Global automotive powerhouse Mercedes-Benz has put a spotlight on how it could develop SUV Ideas on it’s compact car platform by unveiling the Concept GLB at Auto Shanghai back in April 2019.

Regarded by the company as the answer to the question of whether there is space between the GLA and GLC in its SUV range, the concept car has been created to combine coupe-like lines with an emphasis on spaciousness.

A long wheelbase means that the Concept GLB has space for up to seven occupants, while its upright front section and short overhangs give it an off-road feel. Other notable external elements include two shrouds which emerge from the roof frame and feature LED spotlights, as well as a roof box mounted on the rear area.

Heading inside the vehicle, it shows its credentials as a Mercedes compact car but includes special leather features and trim elements. Flexible seating in the second and third rows also mean it would be able to meet a range of needs.

In terms of engine, the Concept GLB features the M 260 four-cylinder petrol engine combined with an 8G DCT dual clutch transmission. It is capable of a maximum output of 165 kW/224 hp and peak torque of 350 Nm. The permanent all-wheel system 4MATIC is also included on the concept.

Britta Seeger, member of the board of management of Daimler AG and responsible for Mercedes-Benz Cars Sales, said the design was “durable and practical”, adding: “Whether it is a generous, seven-seater family vehicle or a versatile leisure time companion: we are certain that this concept will be of great interest to our customers.”
