Modern SUVs coming to market these days tend to be all looks and no substance. Sure, they look the part, but introduce them to a patch of mud and they crumble like a biscuit rolling down a mountain.

Not the Mercedes G-Class though, nuh-uh – this unapologetic block bollard of a car could take on natural disasters and come out on top and we’re about to get one of the ultimate versions – the Mercedes-AMG G 63.

Price Range

Available to order now with deliveries beginning in July, this no-nonsense SUV will set you back at least £143,305 before you add any extras, while a special ‘Edition 1’ model will hit you for £164,495.

Power and Performance

What that kind of money gets you is pretty remarkable though. Under the flat bonnet of the Mercedes-AMG G 63 is AMG’s hand-built four-litre V8 petrol engine, pumping out 585hp and up to 850Nm of torque.

Linked to AMG nine-speed automatic transmission, this means the G 63 can dart up to 62mph in 4.5 seconds and continue picking up speed until it hits 137mph (or 149mph if you pay extra for the optional AMG driver’s package).

Interior

Your £143k will also get you a whole raft of gadgets and luxury. The interior includes a 12.3-inch digital cockpit display and 12.3-inch infotainment display, which come together to create a widescreen cockpit.

The cabin also comes with ambient lighting in 64 colours, three-zone automatic climate control, Burmester surround sound system, smartphone integration, parktronic with 360-degree camera, multibeam LED headlights with adaptive highbeam assist plus and electric sunroof.

External details and Special Edition 1 Variant

On the outside, there’s the AMG sports exhaust system and 20-inch alloy wheels finished in titanium grey, while beneath the surface, there’s the AMG ride control suspension, AMG high-performance brakes, permanent four-wheel drive with three 100 per cent locking differentials.

That Edition 1 variant mentioned earlier rides on 22-inch alloy wheels finished in matt black with red pepper rims.
