Mercedes-AMG has expanded its compact car lineup with the launch of the A 35 4MATIC Saloon.

The new entry-level model is designed to appeal to a younger audience who are looking to combine high performance with a comfortable amount of space for driver, passengers and luggage, Mercedes-AMG explained.

It is powered by a two-litre four-cylinder turbo engine that develops 306 hp, powering the car from 0-62 mph in just 4.8 seconds and kicking onto an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph.

According to Mercedes-AMG, the engine delivers a “spontaneous response” to a press on the accelerator pedal, giving the driver instant feedback and unrivalled feel.

A twin-scroll turbocharger provides extra grunt when needed, blending a high level of responsiveness at low engine speeds and a strong power increase at higher speeds.

The engine’s technological ingenuity is backed up by an array of efficiency-enhancing improvements, ranging from intelligent thermal management for the engine and oil, to high-precision piezo injectors and a multi-spark ignition.

Drivers have the option of changing the A 35 4MATIC Saloon’s on-road dynamics by adjusting the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive programmes. Five modes – Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Individual – are available to meet the demands of the motorist and road conditions.

Tobias Moers, chief executive of Mercedes-AMG, said: “Following the very successful launch of the hatchback model, things are moving along dynamically in the compact class segment at AMG. Sport saloons are the origin of Mercedes-AMG and part of the brand’s core.
