Maserati Announce New Cars Will Be Hybrid

Future Maseratis will be hybrid, self-driving and more Italian than ever!

Maserati have been a thoroughbred Italian performance car manufacturer for many decades. Just like Ferrari and Lamborghini, Maserati are known for creating highly exclusive, luxurious and powerful cars that are powered by beastly, yet refined engines.

These engines have been supplied by Ferrari themselves since 2002 but just recently, Ferrari announced that they would stop supplying their engines to Maserati by 2021 or 2022. This is a shame and will mean that Maserati loses one of their main selling points. However, Maserati have recently announced that they’ve got their own plans to make their cars more exciting and keep customers interested.

That’s right, the historical Maserati brand is now moving to the future with hybrid technology, a brave thing for a luxury performance car manufacturer to announce. Although you may be frowning as you imagine a beautiful Maserati with a Prius engine inside of it, this is a good thing for the brand and it will likely bring new and exciting developments to the Maserati supercars we know and love.

Starting from right now, “all” of Maserati’s new models will feature some sort of electrification, whether it’s a hybrid or wholly powered by an electric battery. This starts in 2020 with the Maserati Ghibli, their 4-door super-saloon which previously sported a Ferrari-built 3.0-litre V6 engine.

Not only will all future Maseratis be at least part electric, they will also be 100% made in Italy and bring new autonomous driving technologies. From now onwards, all Maserati will include some sort of autonomous driving tech, starting with Level 2 enhanced Highway Assist which will likely include things such as lane-keeping assist and adaptive cruise control.

In the near future, Maserati aims to have their cars include Level 3 autonomy which will allow for the car to change lanes by itself, as well as keep correct speed and distance from other cars as seen in Tesla’s cars. These systems will still require drivers to be active and have a hand on the wheel but at the same time, the car can basically drive itself. This is one of Maserati’s goals. 

These three key changes are all a product of FCA’s (Fiat Chrysler Autos) €5 billion investment program for Italy. FCA is made up of big car brands such as Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Maserati and Jeep.

We believe that most people who buy a Maserati do so to drive it but that being said, a self-driving option would be nice to have in the future. As for the hybridisation of their engines, we will just have to wait and see if it truly does give more in performance than it may take in the holy sounds that make us love the Ferrari engines so much.
