Cyan Racing has completed the extensive winter development programme for its 03 Cyan Concept road car, produced in collaboration with Lynk & Co.

New video shows the vehicle – described by Cyan as its interpretation of a race car for the road – being put through its paces on the streets and race tracks of Spain.

With a brutal, oversized rear spoiler and aggressive lines, the Cyan Concept looks every bit the racer. That’s not by chance; the car boasts the same technology that Cyan Racing will compete with in the 2019 FIA World Touring Car Cup.

Its 528-bhp two-litre turbo charged Lynk & Co engine – the same found in the Lynk & Co 03 production road car – was developed by the team behind the 2017 World Touring Car Championship-winning 1.6-litre Volvo engine, and also the award-winning V8 Volvo engine from Cyan Racing’s Australian V8 Supercars programme.

With four cylinders, the engine delivers its power at 7,800 rpm and packs sufficient grunt to accelerate the 03 Cyan Concept from 0-62 mph in just 4.4 seconds, with a top speed of 192 mph.

Once it’s up to speed, the car can then slow from 62 mph to a full stop in a distance of just 30 metres thanks to its dual-circuit hydraulic braking system, which boasts six-piston calipers with 378 mm ventilated discs at the front and two-piston calipers with 290 mm ventilated discs at the back.

With its 20-inch bespoke Cyan wheels and advanced aerodynamics, the car can pull maximum lateral g-forces of 1.5 G when cornering. In comparison, the Saturn V moon rocket just after launch was enduring 1.14 G.

Think that all sounds a little intense for a road car? Thed Björk, racing and development driver for Cyan Racing, agrees. He said: “While this concept might be a bit extreme, we have learned that in order to explore the true characteristics of a car you need to push it to its maximum.”

It would be easy to imagine that, despite its undeniably impressive specifications, the Cyan Concept would still feel less exciting than its track-going sibling. Not according to Björk: “I love driving this car as much as my race car.

“We strive to find the optimal balance between responsiveness and performance in combination with predictable, balanced and safe behaviour. This is the same base philosophy as when we develop race cars.”

Lynk & Co 03 5

Unusually, Lynk & Co and Cyan Racing decided not to showcase their collaboration at the recent Geneva Motor Show.

Rather than mingling with the great and good of the automotive world, the Cyan team are busy preparing for the upcoming World Touring Car Cup season, kicking off in Morocco from April 5th to 7th. And the Concept road car is right there with them; a key part of its ongoing development will see it tested alongside the race car.

As yet, there’s been no news from Cyan or Lynk & Co about the prospects of the 03 Cyan Concept hitting assembly lines any time soon. But from what we’ve seen and heard so far, we’re keeping our fingers crossed for a full production run.
