It’s great to see some home grown talent, in the shape of Lewis Hamilton, walking away from the Formula One (F1) as the champion.
Following a breathtaking race in Abu Dhabi, the Mercedes racer has claimed his second F1 title.
Hamilton was thrashed by his teammate Nico Rosberg in qualifying and ended up having a rough night’s sleep. To make up for the previous day, however, he made a fantastic start and finished the race in first to take the drivers’ title.
On the first corner of the Yas Marina track, Hamilton sped past Rosberg and gripped onto first place throughout the race.
The race was not so great for Rosberg, who needed Hamilton to finish in second place or lower. After trailing Hamilton in second place, Rosberg suffered car problems and ended up back in 14th. However, he found that he was unable to face up to the British driver’s challenge even before his car was in trouble.
Nevertheless, Rosberg still gave Hamilton a hug after the race and told reporters that the British driver deserved to win.
This race marks the 11th of the season that Hamilton has won, an achievement that has only ever been seen by the likes of Sebastian Vettel and Michael Schumacher. What’s more he is the first British racer to win the title twice since Sir Jackie Stewart managed to do so in 1971.
Even Prince Harry showed his excitement for Hamilton winning the race as the Royal told him over the in-car radio: “you are an absolute legend”.
Hamilton won his first drivers’ title during 2008 when he managed to scoot into fifth position on the final corner of the track, slipping the title out of Felipe Massa’s hands. The final race of 2014 saw far less drama as it quickly became apparent that nobody would be able to take Hamilton’s lead away, with Rosberg only managing to do so once when Hamilton pulled into the pit stop to change his tyres.
