One might expect that the original format Land Rover Defender will continue to entertain and exist in one form or another for as far into the future as we can sensibly see. It is arguably the one vehicle that inspires customisation more than any other.

Customised Land Rover Defender

With that last thought in mind Khan Design, who describe themselves as the ‘world’s leading automotive fashion house’ and have had more than a passing fascination with the Defender over the years, have now produced another Huntsman Defender to add to their repertoire – the Flying Huntsman 6×6 Double Cab soft top. Khan made everyone smile with the original Huntsman idea, now we have a sort of elongated double cab pickup – 6 wheels and the Khan trademark long nose. It’s essentially a luxury tweak on the Khan Defender 6×6 Pickup.

One of the reasons the Defender attracts customisation is the utilitarian ethos of a classic design that has stood the test of time, yet also remained pretty basic and box-like. Khan Design like to beef up the Defender and push it into new territory, and this 6×6 3-axle vehicle is certainly in new territory. The vehicle manages to still look decidedly like a Defender, and remains somehow in proportion too thanks to the elongated nose, while also looking incredibly pleasing on the eye. It looks like the kind of automobile that you would expect the armed forces to use as a tough go-anywhere vehicle, traversing desert and shallow rivers alike.

Under the bonnet the Huntsman wields a 500bhp 6.2-litre V8 engine with enhanced braking, and of course tweaked suspension. Outside the Huntsman gets attractive satin black paintwork and red piping on the black wheels giving a redline muscle car effect that compliments the red leather interior very nicely.

Of course it might not immediately look like it, but this is essentially a soft-top Defender with an extra section at the rear and an eye-catching contrast coloured roof that allows an extra 2 passengers to be carried – or presumably anything else that you might use a pickup for with the seats folded and the roof down.

The Khan Flying Huntsman 6×6 Double Cab is likely to come with Huntsman logos on the doors and tailgate, fixed panoramic glass sunroof, heated front seats and exhaust side vents if previous Khan Defenders are anything to go by. At the moment this is purely a one-off vehicle, but rumour has it that we may see it in the metal at the Geneva Motor Show in March. Khan hints that they may make this an available option to the buying public, though the price tag is likely to be in the region of around £250,000 (depending on extras). It may not be for everyone, nor will it be practical for some that want one, but either way it has to be said – Khan always do a great job with the Defender.
