Jaguar’s I-PACE all-electric SUV has been named UK Car of the Year, having already picked up more than 50 other awards.

Jaguar’s all-electric I-PACE SUV has been chosen by a panel of 29 top UK automotive journalists as the 2019 UK Car of the Year, seeing off competition from more than 80 new vehicles.

The likes of Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Volvo were also in the running for the honour, which is intended to highlight the best all-round car to be released within the last 12 months.

It is the latest in a string of awards for the I-PACE, which had already been named Car of the Year in Germany, Norway, Scotland and Switzerland. The vehicle has picked up more than 50 awards to date, and is also in the running for World Car of the Year, World Car Design of the Year and World Green Car of the Year.

Jaguar describes the I-PACE as the most high-tech car it has ever produced, thanks in large part to the vehicle’s fully electric powertrain, fitted with two electric motors.

It was also chosen to debut the manufacturer’s Touch Pro Duo infotainment system, which uses artificial intelligence to adapt to the driver’s preferences and is capable of over-the-air software updates.

The car’s battery can be charged from empty to 80 per cent full within just 40 minutes via a 100 kW connection, while a regular domestic Jaguar-approved wall port – with an output of 8 kW – will achieve the same in just over ten hours.

Judges said the I-PACE, with its £60,995 starting price, gives executive motorists a compelling reason to switch to electric mobility, courtesy of its long-range battery and sporty aesthetic.

John Challen, director of UK Car of the Year Awards, added: “As vehicle manufacturers take electric vehicles more seriously, Jaguar is leading the pack with I-PACE, which offers fantastic range and performance, as well as a stylish and spacious interior for driver and passengers.

“The UK Car of the Year Awards judges are always keen to recognise innovation and that is certainly the case in 2019.”
