INEOS Announce Release of the Grenadier 4×4

In September 2021 I covered the much-anticipated INEOS Grenadier 4×4 as it gets ever closer to an actual launch following its July debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Well, I’m pleased to be able to tell that INEOS has announced that the order books will now officially open on May 18 2022.

INEOS say that the ‘no nonsense’ Grenadier 4×4 will debut with a simple line-up initially, but with much customisation available via a wide array of options and accessories, made easy via a network of pre-wired electrical points and INEOS’s open-source approach. This will allow for buyers to configure their Grenadier to their own needs.

There is arguably always an open door for any aspiring Land Rover Defender box shape challenger to walk through these days, and the INEOS Grenadier is another in a long line aiming to fill that retro-modern void with a timeless design and all mod cons. Based around the ability to be a true off-roader with luxury and comfort at its heart, the Grenadier has certainly leapt ahead of the crowd since its Goodwood reveal surrounded by the Grenadier Cycling Team.

The Grenadier will be available as either a 2-seater or 5-seater Utility Wagon or a 5-seater Station Wagon. The former is a stripped back design intended for heavy work use but still with the refinements required for a modern vehicle. The 2-seater Utility has the capability of taking on board a Euro pallet thanks to a full-length floor. The 5-seater Station Wagon will have the rear bench seats spaced further back than in the 5-seater pickup version allowing the Utility to still have the rear load space required. 

INEOS will also be offering a couple of Belstaff-inspired especially pre-configured editions. The Grenadier Trialmaster is designed for more extreme off-road conditions with all the prep for potential expeditions included. Meanwhile, the Grenadier Fieldmaster is aimed at the ‘adventurer’ among us.

The Trialmaster will benefit from the Smooth Pack as well as a Rough Pack, both as standard, while the Fieldmaster gets the Smooth Pack as standard. The Smooth Pack includes rear view camera, power-heated door mirrors, puddle lamps, and USB power connections. The Rough Pack gives you BF-Goodrich All-Terrain T/A K02 tyres, raised air intake, utility belts on the outside and an auxiliary battery plus front and rear diff locks.

These options are also able to be included with the Utility or Station Wagon versions at a cost of £1,685.

As is the trend these days, orders can be completed online, or there will be a network of 23 sellers across the UK – including a number of agricultural outlets – for those that want to meet with someone to discuss options before buying. Test drives will also be available for customers to test the different specs. After purchase, INEOS offer the peace of mind knowledge that servicing will be able to be taken on by Bosch Service Centres, meaning that you will always either be 45-miles/45-minutes away from your nearest centre.

Power will come from BMW 3-litre 6-cylinder turbo engines; the petrol version will offer 281bhp and 450Nm of torque, while the diesel version will give 246bhp and 550Nm. The Grenadier will also be fitted with a ZF 8-speed automatic gearbox and the INEOS designed permanent 4-wheel drive and central locking diff.

Interestingly, INEOS are also actively encouraging innovators out there to develop their own modifications by providing direct access to interactive manuals online and an open route to being able to contact INEOS headquarters. I think this is a nice move; we see so many excellently modified Defenders, and if the Grenadier is to become a real competitor in this field, then modified versions will surely play their part in the forward momentum.

Pricing will start at £49,000 for the Utility Wagon rising to £52,000 for the 5-seat Station Wagon. Both the Trialmaster and Fieldmaster versions will come in at £59,000.
