Honouring one of the prototypes that led to Ford’s famous victory over Ferrari

If the incredibly exclusive Ford GT supercar wasn’t special enough already, the limited-run Heritage Edition will surely do the trick.

Ford GT Heritage Edition

In its final year of production, the Ford GT will be available in Wimbledon White paint with Antimatter Blue graphics in 2022 to pay respects to the 1964 Ford GT prototype that is best known for being America’s sole Le Mans-winning supercar and of course, beating Ferrari.

Five GT prototypes were built in the 60s with the aim to beat Ferrari at Le Mans, with development starting in 1963 and the first model being debuted less than a year later at the 1964 New York International Auto Show. At the 1966 Le Mans 24 Hours, Ford famously won the race with the Ford GT dominating with 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishes.

The Ford GT Heritage Edition is a homage to chassis GT/105, the fifth and final prototype model to be created in early 1964. This particular car is also noted to have the highest test mileage of the five prototypes, being put through its paces on various circuits such as the Nurburgring, Daytona and Reims. Of the five prototypes, GT/105 is the only one to survive in an unaltered state with the original livery, original chassis and all the racing scars from 60 years ago.

To honour a car that had a large part in the introduction of the GT program we know today, as well as the development of the technology and engineering that allowed Ford to beat Ferrari at the legendary 1966 Le Mans 24 Hours race, the Ford GT Heritage Edition comes with a range of unique touches.

The 2022 Ford GT ’64 Prototype Heritage Edition will sport the aforementioned white paint and blue graphics, as well as a triple racing stripe on the roof to match the original livery. Several exposed carbon fibre elements will also be on show; 20-inch all-carbon wheels painted in Antimatter Blue, carbon front splitter, rear diffuser, side sills, mirror stalks and engine louvres.

Although honouring a race car, Ford has not left the interior totally barebones. Occupants will experience a range of unique finishing touches, including plenty more carbon fibre making up the console and steering wheel face and Alcantara covering the steering wheel, seats and headliner.

Ford GT Heritage Edition

“This is the first Ford GT Heritage Edition that goes beyond celebrating race wins – this one goes deep, and honours the earliest of Ford supercar heritage,” said Mike Severson, Ford GT program manager. “The Ford GT ’64 Prototype Heritage Edition is a modern interpretation of the original, with no mistaking what this car is paying tribute to.”

Production of the 2022 Ford GT ‘64 Prototype Heritage Edition is set for January and it is currently unknown as to how many will be produced. They will also only be available for approved Ford GT customers, obviously.
