Ford Pro, the new commercial vehicle division of Ford, has announced that there will be a new electric 8-seater e-Tourneo Custom MPV for 2023, offering buyers a range of up to 230 miles. The e-Tourneo is based on the new Transit Custom and as a family-friendly version of the commercial vehicle and as such, it will arrive with the same running gear and powertrain setup.

It’s a very sleek and modern looking MPV, whereas in the past, many such vehicles might have had a tendency to look a little clunky. The e-Tourneo Custom will get a 125kW DC battery that features fast-charging, enabling the MPV to reach 80 per cent capacity in 41 minutes from a 15 per cent capacity starting point. Meanwhile, full charging will take just under 8 hours. The new technology also features ‘front loading’ enabling quick 5-minute charging to give you an emergency range of 23 miles. The battery is connected to a 215bhp front-wheel drive motor.

Buyers will get to choose from a standard or long-wheelbase version with diesel and PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) versions to follow hot on the heels of the EV. The diesel and PHEV versions will also add more seating for up to 9. The e-Tourneo Custom has as standard 6-rear passenger seats available to be configured in a multitude of different ways thanks to a clever system of floor rails. They can even be removed entirely should you wish to increase the load carrying for larger objects. Ford has also considered the ease of doing all this too and thoughtfully made the seats in the e-Tourneo lighter than in previous models, which will certainly aid full removal.

Interior trim level choices include Titanium X for luxury travelling, the Activity trim which inspired by off-roading, as well as a regular Sport mode. You can also choose such luxuries that are maybe not expected to feature in an MPV, like man-made leather trim for the steering wheel. Powered sliding doors add a very welcome touch of luxury too, while passengers will be kept comfortable and engaged on long journeys with a sound system from B&O and 3-zone full climate control – and or course plenty of USB sockets; an essential these days.

The coming PHEV version will get an Atkinson cycle 2.5-litre petrol engine and offer a 31-mile range on pure electric power alone. The diesel will be Ford Ecoblue with either 6-speed or 8-speed manual transmissions and in 134, 148 and 168bhp guises. A smartphone app will allow owners to remotely check fuel capacity and remotely lock the vehicle and even enable users to remotely book a service.

The arrival of the e-Tourneo Custom and what will follow will replace the Ford S-MAX and Galaxy range when it arrives in 2023, so while this is certainly not summer that we are experiencing right now, this is still a timely announcement for Ford.
