Onboard vehicle telematics technology could play a key role in tackling crash fraud in the UK, it has been claimed.
According to Cobra UK, 'crash for cash' fraud is an increasing problem, but telematics could ensure insurers have a greater amount of data at their disposal when considering the validity of incidents if the technology was more widespread.
Andrew Smith, managing director at Cobra UK, said: "This could reduce premiums across the board, discourage fraudulent claims and ultimately protect responsible drivers from being targeted by those who deliberately cause accidents."
He added that the system could also help to successfully prosecute fraudsters who are found to have initiated an accident on purpose.
The latest figures from the Insurance Fraud Bureau place the value of the UK's crash for cash fraud sector at upwards of £400 million per annum, meaning criminals are not only gambling with the lives of the public, but they are also costing each individual hundreds of pounds in increased premiums.
