A number of records have tumbled at the recent Race Retro and Classic Car Sale, with more than three quarters (77 per cent) of the lots selling above their estimates.
Many fine vehicles went under the hammer at the event , which took place last weekend, with lots including a rare helmet used by Formula One legend Ayrton Senna that fetched £71,500, as well as a 1958 Tojeiro Jaguar that sold for £286,000.<!–more–>
In total, the event saw 74 lots sold and raised the princely sum of £1.75 million.
"We have worked hard on behalf of our vendors and achieved some excellent prices for both classic and competition vehicles," commented Nick Whale, managing director of Silverstone Auctions.
"Everyone has been delighted and we are extremely proud of our achievements in our first visit to Race Retro."
With record sales tumbling across the board, perhaps one of the standout lots of the day was a 1904 Oldsmobile 'Curved Dash' that really caught the imagination of the buyers.
It was one of the oldest vehicles on offer on the day, but that did not stop bidders pushing the price up to a final sum of £30,250, making it the most expensive purchase of its type in history.
A final record was set on the day not by the buyers but by the auctioneers themselves, as this was the first time the auction has taken place away from its traditional venue in Northamptonshire.
Earlier this month, the latest auction at Mercedes-Benz World at Brooklands broke a record of its own – achieving sales in excess of £1million for the first time.
A number of top-quality classic motors were sold on the day, with highlights of the event including a 1965 Aston Martin DB6 Vantage in mint condition which went for £155,000, as well as a 1970 Alfa Romeo GTAm Evocazione that topped its estimate and sold for £27,500.
