However, with an incredible 37 per cent of the vote, the Mustang prevailed ahead of the BMW M1 (20 per cent) and the Volkswagen Beetle (11 per cent).The iconic car will be celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2014, so the revelation of its popularity in Europe has come as an early present for Ford.It also proves to be a validating statistic, as Ford has now confirmed it will be releasing the Mustang in the UK in the near future.Roeland de Waard, vice president of marketing, sales and service for Ford Europe, said: \u201cFord Mustang is more than a car, it\u2019s the freedom of the open road and the spirit of performance driving.\u201cMustang has been a fundamental part of global automotive culture for almost half a century and is one of the world\u2019s most recognisable vehicles.\u201dFirst unveiled in 1964, the Mustang has been an enormous hit and has captured the imagination of a number of motoring enthusiasts all over the globe.The burly muscle car, perhaps most recognisable in Ruby Red, has made over four million sales in America alone, and has been a notable figure in popular culture. Over the years, it has featured in movies and on television, making nearly 3,000 appearance worldwide. Furthermore the Mustang has been the subject of songs, and has been made into a number of toys – inspiring the next generation of enthusiasts.Celebrating the car’s upcoming 50th anniversary, a “Mustang Countdown” series has been launched, presenting a number of videos to spotlight the car itself and its thousands of fans worldwide.Furthermore, a Mustang Customiser app has been launched and has already attracted 500,000 visits from Europe. The feature is available on both Apple iOS devices and Android phones and tablets, and offers users the opportunity to build their dream cars. Points and badges can be earned and pictures can be saved to use as a wallpaper for their desktop.
