CarFest South, the new motoring festival organised by Chris Evans and former Formula One champion Jody Scheckter, has been hailed as a huge success.

The event took place over the August bank holiday weekend in the grounds of Scheckter's Laverstoke Park Farm in Hampshire and was described by Evans as "absolutely brilliant".

"After three brief but brutal weather fronts paid us a visit on Saturday, the grass soaked up any troublesome mud and the party continued," the BBC Radio 2 DJ and classic car enthusiast said.

Evans added that CarFest has raised at least £750,000 for Children in Need so far, with a second event – CarFest North – due to take place in Cheshire next month.

Reviews from elsewhere were equally positive, with the Telegraph's Andrew English describing the festival as a "staggering success".

He commented: "There were teething troubles certainly, but what an atmosphere."

Vehicles on show at the event included the original Chitty Chitty Bang Bang car, which Evans bought for £500,000 earlier this year.

Scheckter got back behind the wheel of some of his former race cars, while current F1 star Mark Webber was also on site to join in the festivities.

"We have had overwhelming positive feedback from everyone who attended, the event was a huge success and it was a pleasure to host CarFest at Laverstoke Park Farm," Scheckter said afterwards.

As well as the many classic motors, the 20,000-strong crowd was treated to live performances from the likes of Razorlight and The Feeling.

CarFest North will be held at Cheshire's Cholmondeley Castle on September 8th and 9th. The event sold out quickly, but some additional tickets have now been made available.
