Classic car owners across the UK have been advised of the ongoing dangers of travelling during the British winter, with motoring organisation the AA highlighting the many hazards that can trouble drivers during the colder months.
Icy conditions and darker nights add up to a recipe for disaster in many instances and motorists are therefore advised to have their wits about them at all times when getting behind the wheel of a vehicle this winter.
According to data compiled by the AA, more than half of all car insurance claims (54 per cent) over the winter months can be attributed to poor weather.
Parked cars feature in ten per cent of all claims, as motorists slide on icy roads and are unable to avoid a collision with these stationary vehicles.
Furthermore, tail-end shunts are also more likely during poor weather, as drivers may underestimate stopping distances on ice and snow.
Road furniture – such as kerbs, lampposts and signage – also pose a much greater risk to drivers during the winter, as thick snow can obscure these hazards, while excessive speed and a failure to brake in time can mean many drivers hit these obstacles.
"We may not be able to do much about the weather, but we can take precautions to reduce the risk of a drive ending in disaster," commented director of AA Insurance Simon Douglas.
Earlier this month, the Freight Transport Association also issued guidance to UK motorists planning to take to the roads this winter.
According to the body, drivers should keep up to date with the latest weather conditions and Met Office alerts in order to stay safe and prepared when out and about, while packing a number of essentials should help to keep individuals safe should they be unfortunate enough to suffer a breakdown.
Items that could be of major benefit to stranded motorists at this time of year include a warm blanket, provisions of food and water, a warning triangle, jump leads and a charged mobile phone in order to call for aid.
